{"id":23956574,"date":"2026-02-10T22:53:20","date_gmt":"2026-02-10T21:53:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/shymow.es\/?p=23956574"},"modified":"2026-08-30T01:45:49","modified_gmt":"2026-08-29T23:45:49","slug":"why-ai-does-not-read-websites-it-reads-knowledge-structures","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/shymow.es\/en\/why-ai-does-not-read-websites-it-reads-knowledge-structures\/","title":{"rendered":"Why AI does not read websites, it reads knowledge structures"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><b>Object of the analysis<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>This article discusses <b>what &#8220;reading&#8221; means when talking about AI systems<\/b> and why that notion <b>is not equivalent<\/b> to human reading of a website.<\/p>\n<p>The goal is not to describe interfaces, crawlers or publication formats, but to <b>dismantle an inherited assumption<\/b>: that AIs &#8220;read pages&#8221; in the same way that people read documents.<\/p>\n<p>The analysis is placed <b>after<\/b> having understood:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>what it means for an AI to &#8220;cite&#8221; a source<\/li>\n<li>how an AI decides what information to reuse<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A deeper level is addressed here: <b>what kind of object the system actually operates on<\/b>.<\/p>\n<h3><b>1.1 What does &#8220;read&#8221; mean in AI systems?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>In this context, &#8220;reading&#8221; does not describe an experience or a sequential act.<\/p>\n<p>Describes a <b>technical operation on information representations<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p>When it is stated that an AI &#8220;reads&#8221;, it is actually alluding to processes such as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>identification of semantic units<\/li>\n<li>evaluation of relationships between concepts<\/li>\n<li>reuse of compatible fragments<\/li>\n<li>integration in a generated synthesis<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It does not exist:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>layout perception<\/li>\n<li>linear path of the text<\/li>\n<li>narrative comprehension<\/li>\n<li>reading experience as such<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The system does not &#8220;walk&#8221; a web site.<\/p>\n<p><b>It operates on structures that have already been abstracted from the document<\/b>.<\/p>\n<h3><b>1.2 What is NOT analyzed when we talk about reading<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>This article <b>does not analyze<\/b>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>how pages are indexed<\/li>\n<li>how HTML is crawled<\/li>\n<li>how results are presented to users<\/li>\n<li>how human reading experiences are designed<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Nor does it address:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>publishing tactics<\/li>\n<li>formats &#8220;best read by AI&#8221;.<\/li>\n<li>technical adjustments to facilitate ingestion<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>All these issues belong to different layers.<\/p>\n<p>Here, we analyze exclusively the conceptual level: what type of object is readable by a generative system and what is not.<\/p>\n<h3><b>1.3 Scope of disassembly<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>The scope of this article is <b>negative and structural<\/b>, not prescriptive.<\/p>\n<p>Not proposed:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>how to &#8220;make an AI read<\/li>\n<li>how to adapt a website<\/li>\n<li>how to improve results<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It is demonstrated why the assumption &#8220;AI reads my web&#8221; <b>does not describe the actual operation of the system<\/b> and why maintaining such a framework leads to design, governance and expectation errors.<\/p>\n<p>This dismantling is necessary in order to introduce the distinction between:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>document<\/li>\n<li>content<\/li>\n<li>knowledge<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>and the notion of <b>layers<\/b>, central to the Shymow standard.<\/p>\n<h2><b>2. The assumption inherited from the classical model<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>To understand why the concept of &#8220;reading&#8221; fails when applied to AI systems, it is necessary to identify <b>the assumption from which it comes.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>This assumption is not born with AI. It comes from the <b>classic web model<\/b>. <\/p>\n<h3><b>2.1 The web as a set of documents<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>For decades, the web has been understood as a system composed of <b>documents<\/b>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>individual pages<\/li>\n<li>with a beginning and an end<\/li>\n<li>organized to be traveled by humans<\/li>\n<li>consumed sequentially<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In this model:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>each URL represents a significant unit<\/li>\n<li>the document is the container of meaning<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Meaning emerges from the whole, not from the parts.<\/p>\n<p>Human reading presupposes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>continuity<\/li>\n<li>cumulative context<\/li>\n<li>editorial intent<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This framework is consistent for people. It is not necessarily consistent for automated systems. <\/p>\n<h3><b>2.2 Human reading vs. automatic processing<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>Human reading is:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>sequential<\/li>\n<li>contextual<\/li>\n<li>dependent on intent<\/li>\n<li>sensitive to form, emphasis and order<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>An automatic system does not reproduce this behavior.<\/p>\n<p>It does not &#8220;move forward&#8221; through a text.<\/p>\n<p>It does not interpret rhythm or narrative hierarchy.<\/p>\n<p>It does not reconstruct intention based on editorial order.<\/p>\n<p>Instead of reading, <b>process<\/b>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>fragments<\/li>\n<li>patterns<\/li>\n<li>relations<\/li>\n<li>recurrences<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>What for an individual is a coherent document, for the system is <b>fragmentable raw material.<\/b><\/p>\n<h3><b>2.3 Why this assumption is no longer valid<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>The error appears when the human model of reading is transferred to the operation of generative systems.<\/p>\n<p>Assuming that an AI &#8220;reads webs&#8221; implies believing that:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>the document is the operating unit<\/li>\n<li>layout brings meaning<\/li>\n<li>editorial order conditions comprehension<\/li>\n<li>publishing is the same as exposing knowledge<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In generative systems, none of these assumptions hold.<\/p>\n<p>The document is not the final unit.<\/p>\n<p>It is a presentation device, not an object of knowledge.<\/p>\n<h2><b>3. Conceptual separation: document, content and knowledge<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>The central error of the classical model is not technical, but <b>conceptual<\/b>: it treats three levels that fulfill different functions as equivalent.<\/p>\n<h3><b>3.1 Document as a presentation artifact<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>A <b>document<\/b> is an object designed for human reading.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>has a specific format (HTML, PDF, page)<\/li>\n<li>has an editorial structure<\/li>\n<li>responds to a single communicative intention<\/li>\n<li>assumes sequential reading<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>From the point of view of the generative system, the document:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>is not a stable semantic unit<\/li>\n<li>does not preserve meaning by fragmenting<\/li>\n<li>cannot be reused as such<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The document is not legible as a complete object in an operational sense.<\/p>\n<h3><b>3.2 Content as editorial material<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>The <b>content<\/b> is what is expressed within the document.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>explanations<\/li>\n<li>examples<\/li>\n<li>arguments<\/li>\n<li>comparisons<\/li>\n<li>narratives<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The content may be rigorous and valuable, but it remains tied to the document.<\/p>\n<p>Not all content is reusable by generative systems.<\/p>\n<h3><b>3.3 Knowledge as a reusable semantic unit<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><b>Knowledge<\/b> is a unit that:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>has its own meaning outside the document<\/li>\n<li>can be explicitly defined<\/li>\n<li>maintains intention by fragmenting<\/li>\n<li>can be attributed to an entity<\/li>\n<li>has clear limits<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It can be operated by automated systems because it can be identified, evaluated, and reused.<\/p>\n<p>When an AI &#8220;reads&#8221;, the only thing it can really read is <b>this level.<\/b><\/p>\n<h2><b>4. Why an AI does not &#8220;read&#8221; documents<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>The notion of reading applied to documents does not describe the actual behavior of a generative system.<\/p>\n<h3><b>4.1 Lack of reading experience<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>A generative system <b>has no reading experience<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p>It does not exist for the system:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>a beginning more important than an ending<\/li>\n<li>a storyline to be followed<\/li>\n<li>an editorial intention to interpret<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It operates on abstract representations.<\/p>\n<h3><b>4.2 Fragmentation and operational decontextualization<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>In order to operate, the system must <b>fragment<\/b>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>the document is decomposed<\/li>\n<li>the content loses editorial context<\/li>\n<li>only fragments with autonomous meaning survive<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Fragmentation is a necessary condition for reuse.<\/p>\n<h3><b>4.3 Layout and narrative inoperability<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>Core elements of human reading are <b>inoperable<\/b> for AI:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>visual design<\/li>\n<li>graphic hierarchy<\/li>\n<li>narrative rhythm<\/li>\n<li>editorial order<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>AI does not ignore the document due to technical limitations.<\/p>\n<p>He ignores it because it is not the correct object.<\/p>\n<h2><b>5. What does it mean for an AI to &#8220;read&#8221; knowledge structures?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>&#8220;Reading&#8221; means operating on previously abstracted and stabilized knowledge structures.<\/p>\n<h3><b>5.1 Identification of entities and relationships<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>The system recognizes entities and relationships.<\/p>\n<p>Without entity, no reading is possible.<\/p>\n<h3><b>5.2 Use of definitions and limits<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>A structure is readable when it exposes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>clear definitions<\/li>\n<li>explicit limits<\/li>\n<li>application conditions<\/li>\n<li>consistent patterns<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Reading means reducing operational ambiguity.<\/p>\n<h3><b>5.3 Access vs. operational understanding<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>Accessing is not the same as understanding operationally.<\/p>\n<p>To understand operationally is to be able to use without reconstructing.<\/p>\n<h2><b>6. The notion of layers<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>There is no single layer of reading.<\/p>\n<h3><b>6.1 Human layer<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>Document, narrative, and persuasion.<\/p>\n<h3><b>6.2 Machine layer<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>Structure, serialization, and stability.<\/p>\n<h3><b>6.3 Necessary separation<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>Layers can coexist, but they cannot condition each other.<\/p>\n<h2><b>7.
