Extraction, inference, and hallucination: necessary distinctions<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>To properly manage a generative system, it is essential to <strong>differentiate between operations that are often confused.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Extraction, inference, and hallucination are not degrees of the same thing: they are distinct processes with distinct implications.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"21_What_is_knowledge_extraction\"><\/span>2.1 What is knowledge extraction?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Extraction<\/strong> consists of reusing knowledge that already exists in an explicit and defined form.<\/p>\n<p>In a generative system, extraction involves:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>select information associated with defined entities<\/li>\n<li>respect stated limits<\/li>\n<li>do not add content that is not present in the knowledge layer<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The extraction is neither complete nor extensive.<\/p>\n<p>It merely <strong>reuses what has already been defined and governed.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Therefore, extraction is compatible with traceability, attribution, and control.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"22_What_is_inference\"><\/span>2.2 What is inference?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Inference<\/strong> occurs when the system:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>deduces undisclosed information<\/li>\n<li>fill conceptual gaps<\/li>\n<li>establishes implicit relationships<\/li>\n<li>extrapolate beyond defined limits<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Inference can produce coherent and useful responses from a conversational point of view.<\/p>\n<p>But it introduces a structural problem: <strong>the knowledge generated is not governed.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Inferring is not reusing.<\/p>\n<p>It is creating new meaning from patterns, without explicit anchoring.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"23_What_is_hallucination\"><\/span>2.3 What is hallucination?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Hallucination<\/strong> is an extreme case of inference, where the generated content:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>has no basis in existing knowledge<\/li>\n<li>contradicts previous definitions<\/li>\n<li>introduces non-existent facts or relationships<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Not every inference is a hallucination.<\/p>\n<p>But all <strong>hallucinations involve uncontrolled inference.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>From a governance perspective, the difference is not one of severity, but of <strong>origin:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Both break the traceability of knowledge.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"24_Why_they_are_commonly_confused\"><\/span>2.4 Why they are commonly confused<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>These operations are confusing because:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>the output can be equally fluid<\/li>\n<li>the linguistic form does not reveal the origin<\/li>\n<li>the systems do not indicate when they infer<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>From the outside, an inferred answer may seem correct.<\/p>\n<p>From within the system, <strong>it has broken the semantic contract.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Therefore, distinguishing between these processes is not merely an academic matter.<\/p>\n<p>It is a <strong>minimum requirement for designing operable limits.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"3_Why_inference_introduces_structural_risk\"><\/span>3.
